Regenerative Injection Therapies
What are Regenerative Injection Therapies?
Regenerative injections therapies (RIT) are treatments used to alleviate acute or chronic pain resulting from joint, muscle, tendon, ligament and/or cartilage injuries. The injections are composed of different natural substances, depending on your specific needs and are administered directly to the joint, where healing is needed. These injection techniques can help your body regenerate joints and get you back to your life and activities faster.
Different Regenerative Injection Therapies that might be used include:
- Prolotherapy – injection of a sugar solution (dextrose) and a mild local anesthetic (procaine) to create joint stability and reduce pain. See below for more information.
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) – injection of your own blood, which has been spun and concentrated with platelets & growth factors back into your joints to dramatically improve healing
- Hyaluronic Acid – injections of hyaluronic acid can be used to create a cushion between two bones, where osteoarthritis has worn away cartilage
- Neuroprolotherapy/Peri-neural injections – injection of a sugar solution (dextrose or mannitol) into superficial muscle and fascia can significantly decrease nerve pain, which will cause a decrease in inflammation and increase healing time.
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy, is a minimally invasive injection therapy that targets damaged ligaments, tendons and joints in order to stimulate tissue healing. The practice was popularized by Dr. George Hackett, MD, a general surgeon who found that prolotherapy provided impressive, long-lasting results for patients with serious injuries. In many cases, prolotherapy can be used as an alternative to surgical procedures.
How does it work?
Prolotherapy works by promoting a controlled inflammatory response at the site of injured or damaged tissue. This encouraged the body’s natural healing process by increasing local blood flow to areas with poor blood supply. The entire process strengthens while encouraging tissue repair and decreases healing times.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is derived from (your own) healthy blood that is rich in natural growth factors. PRP therapy works similarly to prolotherapy, but is a more targeted & stronger approach which has a greater benefit in more severe injuries and degenerative conditions.
